PILLING

Pilling is also known as "pills" which we can find on our old washed garments. This can be formed by rubbing on loose fibers will formed on the surface of the garments. Pilling is originally formed in the knitted woollen garments due to uneven twisting yarns.

Generally this test will be carried out after a single wash. The initial abrasion on the surface of the fabric is the formation of fuzz.

To do this test we need below things.

  • Pilling Tester
  • Metal plates 4 inch diameter and 1 inch thick
  • grey scale to evaluate
A piece of fabric 10 x 10 inch is sewn and place on the round rubber tube. The outer end of fabric is covered with cellophone tape and metal plates are place on the tester. Run the tester for 300 cycle and then compare the sample with grey scale to give rating.

There are 2 types of machines available for conducting this test.
  • Martendale pilling machine
  • pilling box tester
